Charity Gifting
Can I leave items rather than money to charity?
Yes, it is possible to leave all sorts of things to charities but the most important thing about doing this is engaging with the charity in advance to ensure that the charity concerned is willing and able to take advantage of your kindness. Land, houses, shares, collections are all things that are given to charities not just money and each one of them needs careful consideration and planning to ensure that the charity gets the benefit you intended them to get when you gifted it. Where things normally get tricky are around the conditions that people want to place on items once they pass, must never be sold, must only be used by certain people, must be kept until it reaches a certain market value and must be displayed in a certain way. Any of these conditions just dropped on a charity may get your kind gift rejected as the charity is unable to fulfil your wishes which is why engaging with them early and letting them know what you have in mind is the best approach. This will allow you both to understand what is possible and for you to decide if that is what you still want. If you are planning a major gift to charity then do get in touch and we can help you work out the best way to do this.
